Sweet potato and yam differences

I love sweet potatoes and yams. I never really got to eat them growing up, my mom didn’t care for them I believe. But now that I am a grown up and buy my own groceries I love heading to the produce section and picking up a good lookin’ yam. Let me just leave this here in case you didn’t know the difference, like I didn’t. Because to be honest, I wasn’t sure if I was going to call this a sweet potato, or Yam Chips Recipe.

Sweet Potato and Yams in everything, and on their own, I say! I enjoy making snacks for my Bean that are healthy and that he will like and ask for more of. It’s a slightly more time consuming process, cooking fresh at home versus a quick packaged snack. But the benefits outweigh the time problem to me.

Cooking at home also shows the Bean how his food is made, making it more interesting to eat. He gets to touch, smell, taste and help prepare everything alongside me with my guidance. He tries everything we’re preparing. Watermelon, onions, yams, peppers, mushrooms, spinach… you name it. He doesn’t care how aweful it will taste. It’s the only way he will learn, and that is what these toddler years are for.

Yam Chips Recipe

1 Yam

Olive Oil

Seasoning Salt/ Garlic Salt/ other seasoning of choice.

Step 1 Preheat oven to 425 F .  Wash and slice your yam into thin pieces.

Step 2 Drizzle olive oil and seasoning of choice onto yam slices in a bowl or mixing container. Mix

Step 3 Place on baking sheet, put in oven. Cook for 10 minutes on one side, flip (this can be tedious) and cook until browned. This can happen fast, so keep an eye  on them. Some of mine came out a little black because I got distracted. They were still eaten up quickly though!

Note: Tell me how you like these, and which kind of spice did you use? I can’t handle heat, so always steer clear of spicy. I really like that I can include this in my Vegetarian/vegan transition menu, because the goal is to make it there. But the process should be slow and well thought out.

Becoming Vegetarian

I have tried being vegetarian before. It was easy at first, then I got hungry. I didn’t know how to prepare enough meals that would keep me full and my body healthy. Now, in 2016 I am actively working towards bringing more vegetables and fruits into our daily diet in order to make it seem regular and normal.

This normalizing of food prep by slowly working it into my daily life is making my transition to vegetarianism so much easier. I hope to go vegan, and try Raw Vegan… or at least Raw ‘Til 4. I would love to see the effects it has on my body are as everyone else claims. The promise of feeling happier and having healthier bodies is a motivator to learn more about it for me. Anyways, that’s what’s RAD in our house, this yam chip recipe.
